Inhalt

John, Suzan, Titty, and Roger are very happy when their new friend Jim Brading invites them to go sailing on his yacht, the Goblin. They all love ships and the sea. Mother is a little worried about the plan, but Jim and the four children promise to stay in the harbour and not to sail out into the open sea.
But Jim forgets to buy petrol for the ship's engine. He leaves the children on the Goblin, safely anchored in the harbour, while he goes ashore to buy some. He'll only be ten minutes. But he doesn't come back. The fog comes down and the tide rises, pulling the anchor off the bottom. Now the Goblin is drifting - drifting out of the harbour. Night is falling and with it comes a wind - a wild wind and a stormy sea...
It is impossible to turn back, and dangerous to go on.
