John Keating is the new charismatic English teacher at Welton Academy, a very tratitional New England boarding school. Questioning authority and going against the conformist norm, he challenges his students to live life to the fullest, to "seize the day". He teaches them to act on their impulses and to be spontaneous, free thinkers. Some of the boys are inspired by his idealism and form a secret society based on their mutual appreciation of poetry. Here they learn to express their feelings and to find out woh they are and what they really want. But the school authorities refuse to tolerate this obvious rebellion against their traditional rules, and what follows is a conflict with tragic consequences...
