Born in Melbourne, Patricia Shaw has worked as a teacher, a political journalist and an oral historian, but gave this up to pursue a literary career. Having won awards for her poetry and short stories, Patricia went on to write her first book, and Brother Digger was published in Australia in 1984. This was followed by Pioneers of a Trackless Land, Valley of Lagoons, River of the Sun, The Feather and the Stone, Where the Willows Weep, Cry of the Rain Bird, Fires of Fortune, The Opal Seekers, The Glittering Fields, A Cross of Stars, Orchid Bay, Waiting for the Thunder, The Dream Seekers, On Emerald Downs, The Five Winds - winner of the prestigious German literary award, the Corine International Book Prize - and Storm Bay. Patricia lives on the beautiful Gold Coast of Australia, enjoying the beaches and subtropical lifestyle. She has two children and two grandchildren and her other interests are reading and research, as well as being a devoted fan of native birds. She is a life member of the Animal Welfare Association.
