Inhalt

Alvina Houghton is the only child of a small-town draper in the Midlands who has frittered away his fortunes on a series of a hare-brained enterprises. She is determined to make her own life and to go her own way. In the course of that quest she becomes first of all a nurse, but returns home to help jer father to run his latest whim - a dingy home cinema. And in this lively and unpredictable environment she falls in love with a young Italian in a vaudeville act. Between her and Ciciothere develops that relationship which D. H. Lawrence so often and profoundly chronicles in his works - the alternating tides of attraction and repulsion between a man and a woman of different temperament and background. In coping with this predicament of mind and sense, Alvina Houghton becomes involved in an intricate and terrible problem of choice.
